Artist's Comments

This is the alternate version of my Celtic Swallowtail design. This version shows the Celtic weave in all of it's glory. :)

Artist's Comments from the first design.

This butterfly is a sort of combination piece. I wanted to do a second butterfly design based on a swallowtail's shape and markings. I wanted to re-use the lovely bright green that I first used in the Virgo design (later it evolved into wanting to combine the pink with the green, as I've always been a fan of that combination). Also, I wanted to branch out a bit and do a more intense Celtic weave than the ones I usually create. At first, these desires were completely separate from one another, but slowly, they started coming together, with the weave falling into place last, and being the most challenging part.

I've seen a lot of really wonderful Celtic weaves on this site, and the complexity is great, but intimidating. I'm more of a small picture person. The tedious tasks that drive others nuts don't bother me at all, and can even be soothing at times. One reason the layered mandalas suit me so well as an art style. A complex weave, though, takes significantly more planning and that was a bit daunting as I struggled to come up with a weave that looked good.

Finally, I decided to start trying to do a bit more studying on weaves. I downloaded a few from random deviants so that I could study them more intently and learn a bit about how the lines flow and mix together. Then I looked to see if anyone had posted any tutorials, and I found this.

:iconsidneyeileen: created a great tutorial that not only walks you through a weave that she created, it also gives some great analysis and information beforehand that is quite useful. After reading through the tutorial, I did a rough sketch in Photoshop to get the lines in place for my weave. After the lines were in place, I imported the lines into Flash and traced and polished them until I had a completed weave.

This is one of two final variations that I really liked. The first one shows more of the butterfly, and can be found here. [link]

The final design was completely made in Flash. The only Photoshop work was some early sketchwork for the weave and the addition of the copyright information at the end.

Hey, good to see you've caught the knotwork bug... pun only slightly intended. :) This is your first major knotwork piece, correct? Well, that you've uploaded to dA. I remember seeing Celtic themes throughout your circular designs but from memory the knots were fairly basic or at least not the main attraction. But this is a very impressive beginning.

There are a few things I could recommend but they are mainly points on style. Like the over/under could have a bit more contrast between the black lines and grey fill. Lightening the grey and thickening the lines would help in that regard. Also as a matter of style, if you cut and splice the ribbons in the right places you could probably get the entire piece to be one ribbon. Currently each separate ribbon (wings, torso, and antenna) doesn't have any intertwined knots inside so it'd be simple to redo and make the entire piece look more whole.

You have done a great job filling the space so that even without outside influence or color, you recognize the shape. I started knotwork with boring squares... so design wise, this is solid.

While I've been meaning to upload my own tutorial (I'd curse procrastination but that can wait) I might finally get around to some basics now that my 1000 cranes is mostly finished. Beyond that, I remember one reason you started watching me was because of my knotwork so if you ever would like to bounce ideas off me or would like more tutoring than basics, feel free to ask. It's the least I can do for all the comments and favs you've given me. :) And even if you don't, I cannot wait to see where your designs lead you.

Thank you very much. :D I'm really glad you like the weave.

Yeah, I decided to overlay the weave lines on top of the butterfly lines and cut out around the weave. :)

I've got another design in the works featuring weaves, though not quite as complex as this one. I probably will do more in the future, though. :)

I know. Between that and the fact that you create your own, it's kind of a boost to know that you like mine. :)

I can imagine it is.
