Thanksgiving Icons

Description

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you who are celebrating this week. :D

This piece was an interesting challenge in two ways. First, I spent a lot of time researching Native American patterns (quilts, baskets, beadwork, etc.) to work on branching out from my standard Celtic weaves and Indian mehndi. I've been wanting to branch out for awhile, and felt that a Thanksgiving design might be a good place to start.

Second, I decided to ignore my usual dislike for the way I draw less pattern-oriented graphics and embrace it for the icons within the mandala. I generally find the way I draw things like the turkey in the middle too cartoon-y, yet for this design, it seemed to fit. This actually turned out to be a piece that I'm pretty proud of (and Robert declared it one of his favorites, so that's always an ego boost.) ;)

I hope all of you have a great holiday and a wonderful weekend.

Research and minor references (mostly to make sure I didn't forget something on the turkey) from various sources through Google.

Can I just start by saying WOW?! That is incredibly detailed, well executed and quite original!
I really love all the details you put into this, the many different patterns and the overall layout. I can honestly say I have never seen anything quite like this, and that's saying a lot! I never even would have thought this was a vector, I'm reminded of traditional cross-stitches or quilts.
The way you presented Thanksgiving is quite fitting, the colors are fabulous and the many different elements represent the holiday nicely.
Keep up this great style, it is truly beautiful to look at!
